Unusual interests/hobbies...turn on or turn off?

Do men have trouble connecting with ladies that have interests that are a bit....different? I've never been much into the bar/party scene and most of my hobbies aren't very common. I play two Chinese musical instruments (I'm not Asian, but I took lessons when I lived in China for 5 years), do Irish dance, and I love all kinds of needlework (knitting, crochet, embroidery). I'm pretty sure most guys have little interest in these things. If you're in a relationship with someone with completely different interests, how did you meet/connect with them?
