In the dark knight movie, why did batman save harvey dent when he said he was going after rachel?

In the movie, batman had to choose between saving dent or rachel..........when gordon asked him who he was going to save......he said rachel but instead he saved dent and let rachel die.........that doesn't make any sense......does anybody know y????????????????????
