Why is Creationism so prevalent in America?

I wish I knew. The other thing that is so annoying here is that so many of these people seem to think the U.S. is God's favorite country, and thus when something goes wrong -- economic problems, a hurricane, etc. -- it's God's punishment for turning against him. The ignorance is sickening.
